Yankees Continue to Find Ways to Win Despite Injuries:

Yea, maybe the experts were wrong that said when the New
York Yankees veterans go down, the team will struggle to win games. Well, I
guess that's not the case because they've been with out Jorge Posada for
about a week, Andy Pettitte continues to miss starts and the team is still
finding ways to win with other role veterans and one player coming into his
own as a great.
Robinson Cano was awarded the Major League Player of the Month for April and
he deserved it. Cano led the American League in batting average for the
month. He's learning how to protect Alex Rodriguez in the lineup. It
shouldn't be long before pitchers choose to pitch to ARod just to avoid
Cano. Cano was injured against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, so it's
expected to he will miss Saturday's game but it's only day-to-day injury.
The bigger concern is the health of designated hitter Nick Johnson. He
reported soreness in his wrist. Manager Joe Girardi expects Johnson to go on
the disabled list after Johnson returned to New York for a consultation. He
hopes it's only a cortisone shot for the patient hitter. When a player goes
down, it means another player gets an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Marcus Thames gets to show his hitting potential now that Johnson is no
longer in the lineup. Johnson's had trouble hitting this season, but he
walks an awful lot. Thames should get every opportunity to succeed in the DH
role. If the injuries continue to plague Johnson and Thames doesn't perform
well, expect the Yankees to look for other viable options. Jermaine Dye is
still available, but his asking price is a little higher than what teams
want to pay him. The Yankees could move some lower prospects for a different
veteran bat. This will take longer because teams still think they've got a
shot this early in the season.
The Yankees will probably call up Eduardo Nunez to play infield for the rest
of the weekend because of Cano's injury. Nunez leds the Yankees' farm club
in batting with a .350 average. It should be interesting to see if he gets
put into a game with the big club. Ramiro Pena will get the start on
Saturday. It's interesting to see which players step up during the season
and make a name for themselves, especially if they've been career minor
leaguers or also ran former greats. The Yankees will continue to win games,
it seems like they always have some one to step in and play well for
stretches.
