Yankee Injury Concerns:

Age, some people say is just a number. This isn't true in
the sports world. It looks like the hopes of the New York Yankees seem to
have taken a hit when three of their "Core Four" players didn't play on
Wednesday. Pitcher Andy Pettitte is expected to miss his next start after an
MRI revealed mild inflammation in his pitching elbow. Mariano Rivera
represents the team's best warrior, wanting to close every game. Yankees
manager Joe Girardi resisted the temptation as the he wanted to give his
closer an extra day off heading into a weekend series at Fenway Park against
the Boston Red Sox.
Yankees captain Derek Jeter is beginning to show his age a bit. He plays a
position that showing age would greatly affect the outcome of the game.
Catch Jorge Posada also seems to breaking down, requiring more rest that
normal. These should all be red flags, but Yankees General Manager Brian
Cashman doesn't think it's an emergency right now. We'll see what happens.
If any of these four guys miss extensive time, the Yankees could lose ground
on the Tampa Rays and enter into a wild card race with the Red Sox. The Rays
are the best team in baseball, but the Yankees have the experience to defeat
the Rays over the course of the season.
There aren't any quick fixes out there yet. It's too early in the season for
teams to be trading their top players. Expect the Yankees to add a bat some
time. Designated hitter Nick Johnson can't stay healthy and fourth starter
Javier Vasquez can't get players out. We'll see what happens with the
Yankees. Fans know money's not an issue and anything other than a repeat
would be a disappointment. It's going to be an interesting rest of the Major
League Baseball season.
