Woods Has Solid Round at PGA Championship:

Tiger Woods had his first sub-par round in seven official
contests on Thursday. His first round 71 leaves him three strokes behind the
leaders at Whistling Straights for the PGA Championship. It was a great
stride for Woods after last weekend's disaster. He started hot, birding
three of the first four holes. He then gave it all back until his birding
his final hole. It helps Woods derail some unwanted achievements too. He
hasn't won a tournament this year. This is the longest into a season that
Woods has gone without winning a tournament. He is the greatest golfer of
all time. He just was affected by what happened last November and firing
Hank Haney , his swing coach, that he could not win a tournament this
season.
It might be a positive for Woods. It would humanize him even more and show
that the golf world is more competitive because Woods isn't a threat to win
every tournament. He had several birdie opportunities on Thursday. If he can
keep towards the top of the leaderboard, Woods could be in contention
entering the weekend. It would be a welcome development for the broadcasters
and PGA.
Woods last won the Australian Masters last November, his last PGA tour win
was the BMW Championship last September. He has 71 career PGA tour titles
and 14 major championships. The game of golf needs Woods to be great again.
Fans want to see him chase and break Jack Nicklaus' majors wins record.
Woods can still do it. Will his 15 championship come this weekend at
Whistling Straights? It would go a long way to Woods re-establishing himself
as the best in the game. He isn't right now, but a win and spot on the Ryder
Cup team would help.
