Wizards Win Lottery, Which Player will Have an Impact:

Commissioner David Stern is often asked about the fairness of the draft lottery. The worst team should get the number one pick, right? The NFL does it, why shouldn't the NBA do it? I would include the MLB and NHL draft, if it wasn't for the fact that those players selected don't have an immediate impact on their team. It's changing somewhat in the NHL, bringing kids right from the draft, but those players are the exception.

Stern reiterates that the lottery is necessary for teams not to tank the entire season just to get the best player available. The Celtics did it a few years ago, didn't get the number one pick, traded most of their picks and roster for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. It worked out for the Celtics, they've had some great years, including a championship. They're also poised to get another ring this season. The theory is sound, a lottery that gives the best chance to the team with the worse record.

It's a sound theory, the last team with the worst record that won the number one pick was 2004, when the Orlando Magic chose Dwight Howard. It happened previously in 2003 when the Cleveland Cavaliers selected LeBron James. That's when fans cried fowl, stating that Stern rigs the lottery. That's entirely not true. It was proven again this season. The Washington Wizards won the first overall pick. The team with the worst record, the New Jersey Nets will choose third.

It's believed that the Wizards will choose former Kentucky freshman John Wall. Wall, a point guard should help put together a team in shambles. Star Gilbert Arenas was suspended for the season for bringing in a gun into the locker room. They also shed the contracts of Antawn Jamison and Brendan Haywood. The Wizards need a key piece to start rebuilding and Wall could be that floor leader for the next decade. He's going to need help though, and that's why the Wizards should go after a tier two free agent, one that won't demand a ton of money but can excel with a great point guard running the show.

Philadelphia chooses second, they'll probably take player of the year Evan Turner from Ohio State. Turner will develop into a great guard, but it's going to take time for him to adjust to the NBA game. It's true for most of the prospects, most early picks were only in college for one season. It takes a lot to go from college to the NBA and only one year in college makes it harder for most players. We'll see what happens, but Wall, Turner and the other early picks will vie for NBA Rookie of the Year next season and it should be interesting if that player was a one and done or a senior that spent a couple of years learning about the game.
