Vick Gets Another Chance to Prove Himself

It’s not often that players in the NFL get a second chance. Players get second and third chances, like Jeff Garcia, and still end up playing in the second-rate United Football League. You need special set of skills to be granted another opportunity to shine. Michael Vick will get that opportunity when he starts against the Detroit Lions.

The guy he replaces, Kevin Kolb, entered his first year as the starter for the Philadelphia Eagles. He replaced long time quarterback Donovan McNabb. McNabb was traded to the division rival Washington Redskins. Kolb was set to be the unquestioned starter, now he has to come back from a concussion to play football again. The NFL is taking many precautions with players that suffer concussions. They’re getting tested during the week to make sure that they’re able to play in games come Sunday.

Vick did a great job against the Green Bay Packers. Jim Schwartz has a full week to prepare against Vick, which is one angle to watch on Sunday when the two teams meet. Eagles head coach Andy Reid must figure out ways to use Vick. He used Vick primarily in Wildcat formations last year. They’ve worked with him on staying in the pocket and throwing first. Why not utilize his running style, to create throws and running it if there’s no one to throw the ball to.

There is a fan base that wants Vick to start even when Kolb’s healthy. It might grow louder if Vick wins a game or two in Kolb’s absence. It’s bad luck for a guy that’s already replacing a great QB, now he may lose his job to a back up. Kolb will get the starting job back. The Eagles haven’t said it straight out, but they’re not going to give up on Kolb yet. The interesting part is seeing whether he can keep the starting job with Vick waiting for another opportunity to prove he’s a starting QB in the NFL.
