New NFL Season, Two Franchises Prove Their Still Among Elite :

Every year there expects to be change in the NFL. It’s the
ebb and flow of players moving from team to team, retirements. The top teams
have the best players and the coaches can tailor their rosters to what they
want to do on the field. This Sunday, two teams that always seem to play
well, the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers won their opening
games.
The Patriots don’t have any offensive or defensive coordinators listed.
Their quarterback, Tom Brady runs the offense and chooses the plays. He’s
earned the right after winning three Super Bowls and almost winning 18 games
a few years ago. The Patriots young defense made easy work of the Cincinnati
Bengals, winning 38-24. The point total is a little high, but it doesn’t
matter when you get touchdowns from the most consistent wide out in the
league, Wes Welker. Welker in the slot makes defense worry about crossing
routes, along with containing the deep ball to Randy Moss.
The more impressive performance came from the Patriots secondary. They lost
their best cover corner, Leigh Bodden before the start of the regular
season. They have a very raw secondary that held Terrell Owens and Chad
Ochocinco for 19 receptions, 202 yards with one touchdown combined. That’s a
quality job of holding down one of the most hyped receiving tandems in
recent memory.
The Steelers won using their dependable defense. Dick LeBeau does a great
job of preparing his squad every Sunday. Troy Polamalu proved he still can
be a disruptive force against a solid Atlanta Falcons offense. The Steelers
were hindered by not having their franchise quarterback. Dennis Dixon did an
admirable job of managing the game for the Steelers, riding Rashard
Mendenhall to the win. The Steelers will be in the hunt if Dixon can win two
of the games while Ben Roethlisberger sits because of a suspension.
The Steelers and the Patriots looked like quality teams in week one. The
Patriots were expected to do well in the AFC East. They looked great while
the rest of the division looked average. Bill Belichick can still put
together an elite team. Mike Tomlin and the Steelers still have to weather
three games without Big Ben, but if they’re able to rely on Mendenhall and
the tough defense, the Steelers could make it to the playoffs.
