Trade Deadline Seemingly Quiet:

Saturday is the trade deadline. It's going to be a sleepy deadline compared to other years. Jayson Werth, Ted Lilly and Roy Oswalt don't seem like guys that will be moved. The three were some of the most talked about players in the past month. The usual suspects have been really quiet so far this trade deadline time. The New York Yankees almost landed Cliff Lee, but the Texas Rangers swooped in with Justin Smoak and Lee was off to Texas from Seattle.

It's odd the Yankees haven't added any player yet. They've been in contact with the Toronto Blue Jays about left handed reliever Scott Downs, but he's not exactly an impact player that the Yankees usually get at the deadline. The Boston Red Sox are also involved with trying to get Downs. The Yankees are also looking to add a bat, but they're hesitant to clog up the designated hitter role. Adam Dunn is a name that could help the Yankees, but he doesn't want to be a full time DH. He really likes Washington D.C., but he's not going to get the four year deal he's been asking about.

More teams are valuing their younger prospects over a quick fix. Few players have an impact like Lee did last season with Philadelphia. The Phillies don't have great prospects after acquiring Roy Halladay this past off season. They could replenish by trading Werth. Teams don't want Werth unless it's a one year chance to make it deep in the playoffs. Teams really like their prospects more than in previous years. It's value now versus a huge payoff later.

The Tampa Rays are the model franchise for developing prospects instead of trading away for a solution now. It's paying off because they have two of the best prospects in baseball playing for Triple-A Durham. Desmond Jennings, the top hitting outfield prospect will likely join the team in September. He will get a starting spot next season once Carl Crawford leaves in free agency. They also have a pitcher that might join the Rays bullpen by the end of this season. Teams are more hesitant than previous seasons to trade away prospects. The Yankees sacrificed a season to get A.J. Burnett and C.C. Sabathia. They were rewarded by winning the World Series last season. MLB teams are learning to adapt, maybe the pendulum will swing back to winning now, but right now, prospects have more upside to winning now.
