NFL Sunday Means A Few Surprise Upsets

That’s why you play the game. It’s the oldest adage in sports. In the NFL, any given Sunday means your team can beat even the top teams in the league. It was proved on Sunday as the Arizona Cardinals defeated the New Orleans Saints, the New York Giants downed the Houston Texans and the Oakland Raiders downed the San Diego Chargers. There was a myriad of reasons why the favored team win, but mostly because they didn’t perform while the other team did what it needed to win.

The Raiders ended a 13 game losing street against the Raiders on Sunday, winning 35-27. It took every bounce for the Raiders to win. They blocked two Chargers punts and scored a touchdown late on a fumble recovery to put the game on ice. It was an impressive performance as the Chargers lost their third road game this season. Jason Campbell spelled an injured Bruce Gradowski and had a quality game, throwing for 159 yards and one touchdown. Philip Rivers threw for 431 yards and two TDs in the losing effort.

The Cardinals helped undrafted rookie QB Max Hall by scoring three defensive touchdowns in a 30-20 win over the defending Super Bowl champions. Hall completed 17 passes for 168 yards, throwing an interception that led to a Saints field goal. The credit for the win goes to the impressive performance of the Cardinals defense. They intercepted Drew Brees three times and scored three TDs, two fumble recovery TDs and an interception return for a score by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to finish off the Saints.

The NFL is the greatest league in professional sports because any team can win on any given Sunday. The outcomes are never predetermined and on the best day, a team can win against any competition. It’s what makes the NFL truly great. The Cardinals are alone in first place in the NFC West. The Raiders are tied with Denver and San Diego for second place behind the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s the NFL, anything’s possible and that’s why they play the game.
