The Steelers are the Real Deal

It’s five weeks into the NFL regular season and there’s a
ton of concern in Dallas and Minnesota. Ben Roethilsberger is returning
after the bye week and the Pittsburgh Steelers could become a great dominant
team with Big Ben under center. Using a combination of Dennis Dixon, Byron
Leftwich and mostly Charlie Batch, the Steelers went 3-1 to start the
season. Joe Flacco led a game winning drive in week four is the only blemish
on the Steelers record.
Roethilsberger is an elite QB and now the team is only getting better. Mike
Wallace shined with two touchdowns and 100 receiving yards in a win over
Tampa Bay in week three. He has provided a deep threat, proven by his nine
receptions for 211 yards. Roethilisberger will help Wallace increase his
number of receptions and Wallace will get a chance to showcase that
breakaway speed. Rashard Mendenhall will continue to be the Steelers
workhorse running back. He’s piled up 411 yards through four games. Ben does
such a great job moving the pocket. He creates extra time with his feet. He
did it behind a sub-par offense line last season. He makes the offense
better.
Dick LeBeau is still drawing up the impressive blitzes and stunts for the
3-4 defense. The entire key to any defense is tackling. It’s a rudimentary
skill that most players still do, but often choose for the flasher hit or go
for the interception. Lawrence Timmons, one of Pittsburgh’s inside
linebackers, is arguably the best tackler in the league. The 3-4 defense
works because their big linebackers have the ability to blitz the QB along
with the speed necessary to cover tight ends and slot receivers. LeBeau does
a great job disguising blitzes so the opposing QB doesn’t know which
linebackers are coming or dropping into coverage.
The Steelers have a great opportunity to become a complete team. The
linebackers are great. Troy Polamalu is a game changer that teams must game
plan around. The offense will come alive now with Ben leading the offense.
Mendenhall’s numbers might dip somewhat, but expect the defenses to cheat to
stop the run less and if they do, Wallace can burn them deep. The Steelers
are ranked as the best team in the NFL. They’re only getting better and the
rest of the AFC better be ready.
