Harper and Strasburgh Have Nats Fans Excited:

Bryce Harper became the number one pick in the Major League
Baseball Draft. Anyone that's seen the kid hit are amazed not by the
distance, but the sound and bat speed. Harper will be in the majors at some
point next season. He's going to be on the same fast track that Steven
Strasburg was on this season. Harper once hit a home run off the wall at
Tropicana Field as part of a home run derby competition.
The kid was already on the cover of Sports Illustrated last summer. He's
going to sign because the Nationals can't afford not to pay him. He's going
sell tickets at every level of minor league ball. He'll probably start with
the Nationals Gulf Coast League. If he proves his worth after signing, the
highest he'll make it is to High A baseball. The bigger question is which
position Harper will play with the Nationals?
He's always seen as a catcher, he throws players out from his knees. It's a
steeper learning curve for catchers to get the majors because they have to
learn the defensive side of the game. He'll have to learn how to call games,
get to know the pitchers. It's hard for a young kid to do. He's not happy,
but the better decision would be to move him to a corner outfield. He can
develop his game quicker, making the progression through the minors that
much faster.
It's really unknown how much impact Harper will have on Major League
Baseball. What is certain is the fact that if Harper works out, they'll have
the promising two players in baseball in Harper and Strasburg. It looks like
the Nationals learned from all the drafts the Tampa Rays did, losing all
those season to get set up for a World Series trip and the best record in
baseball in 2010. Get excited Nationals fans, you're team's going to be good
in the next few years.
