Seven players took their place among the greats on August
7. Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Dick LeBeau, John Randle, Rickey Jackson, Russ
Grimm and Floyd Little joined the greatest professional football players,
being enshrined in Canton, OH. It's one of the strongest classes in recent
memories, led by two the best players to ever play offense. Smith holds the
record for most rushing yards with 18,355 yards while playing for the Dallas
Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals. Smith, along with Rice were elected in their
first years of eligibility.
Rice statistics mean he was the most important wide receiver in the history
of the league. He played for 20 seasons, racking up 1,549 receptions, 22,895
receiving yards and 208 touchdowns. During his ceremony, he thanked and
highlighted many of his career feats, including his feeling that he could
still play the game. That's an impressive statement from one of the greatest
athletes to play the game of football. Rice played with two of the greatest
quarterbacks in Joe Montana and Steve Young. He was also helped by Bill
Walsh's inventive West Coast offense.
Randle recorded 137.5 sacks during a 14 year career playing defensive
tackle. Randle went undrafted out of college, making the enshrinement
ceremony even more sweet for Randle. LeBeau was awarded for his playing
career as much as his tremendous coaching career. He invented and installed
the zone blitzing scheme. He is currently the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive
coordinator. Grimm was the leader of the Washington Redskins offensive line,
being called the "Head Hog" by his former coach Joe Bugel. Jackson now has
the distinction of becoming the first New Orleans Saint enshrined in Canton,
which is hard to believe. The franchise has had a lot of history, including
some great players like Archie Manning and a few others.
These seven players will enjoy the start of every August from now on because
the Hall of Fame club is so exclusive. They all get together each year to
welcome a few more into their exclusive club. The enshrinement means that
the Hall of Fame game is August 8. This year, it's the Cincinnati Bengals
against the Dallas Cowboys. It means the games don't matter, but it will
still be great to see T.O. with Palmer and Ochocinco against the Dallas
Cowboys and Tony Romo.
