It’s going to be a quality showdown between the Alabama
Crimson Tide and Florida Gators this weekend. Both teams enter the contest
with unblemished records. The Crimson Tide hold onto the number one ranking.
In previous match ups between two top five teams, the winner usually wins
the national championship. Number four Notre Dame defeated number one Miami
(FL) 31-30 in 1988, the Fighting Irish went on to win the national
championship. In 2008, when the Tide and Gators met in Atlanta, Alabama was
ranked number one and Florida was number four. The Gators went on to win the
game and the national championship that season.
Yea, this game means everything to both teams. In another twist, the three
years of games between Florida and LSU, the winner of the contest went on to
win the national championship on all three occasions. The desire to win
oozes from the fans of both schools. It stems from the two head coaches.
Nick Saban and Urban Meyer played in Ohio and didn’t settle in the South
until taking the jobs at SEC schools. It’s also important to remember that
the veterans have been on both sides of losing to each other.
When two teams ranked this high and such storied programs clash, it’s
usually the lower seed that takes the game. It should be interesting to see
what happens. The Crimson Tide did a great job against Ryan Mallett in the
second half last week. Expect more of the same, Florida’s offense hasn’t
faced a solid defense like Alabama. Mark Ingram understands what it takes to
win games like this, he’s going to have a major impact. Alabama breaks the
trend of losing to the lower ranked team, defeating Florida. This victory
should propel the Crimson Tide all the way to the BCS National Title game.
