SEC Powerhouse Gets Major Reinforcement

The Alabama Crimson Tide, the number one ranked team in the country, will be getting one great reinforcement come this Saturday. Head coach Nick Saban announced that reigning Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is a full go for the contest against Duke. Ingram is returning after missing two games because of arthroscopic knee surgery.

Ingram has practiced all week for Alabama. It’s going to be interesting to see if he’ll be eased back into running the ball. His replacement, Trent Richardson performed more than admirably. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry on 32 runs in the first two games. Duke doesn’t exactly strike fear into opponents. They do have to get Ingram ready though, after the Blue Devils, they faced three ranked opponents to begin the grueling Southeastern Conference schedule. In consecutive weeks, they face number 12 Arkansas, no. 10 Florida and no. 13 South Carolina. That’s a tough schedule for the number one team in the country, and Ingram is still the best player for Alabama.

Florida begins their conference schedule this weekend with a trip to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers. It should be an easy victory for the Gators. The Vols are coming off a 48-13 defeat against the no. 7 Oregon Ducks. They’re led by first year coach Derek Dooley. Dooley was a late hire after Lane Kiffin jumped ship to take the head job at Southern Cal. Tennessee running back Tauren Poole is leading the SEC in rushing, averaging 136 yards in two games. He’s the major threat for the Gators. It also helps that Florida head coach Urban Meyer hasn’t lost a contest to the Vols, going 5-0 including 2-0 on the road.

The other two compelling contests, Michigan State hosting Notre Dame and Texas visiting Texas Tech should be great games to watch. The Spartans are going to have their hands full, if Dayne Crist plays for the Irish. The offense looked lost without their starting quarterback last week against Michigan. The Longhorns are looking to avenge the 2008 loss in Lubbock that produced one of the greatest endings in college football history. Then-receiver Michael Crabtree slipped out of the tackle by Curtis Brown, scored the winning touchdown and dashed the national championship hopes for Texas in 2008. The ending should be different this season. Mike Leach is gone from the Red Raiders. The coaching staff is new, but the style of play is similar. Texas has allowed 330 yards passing so far, with opposing QBs completing 65 percent of passes against. If they can limit mistakes, they should avoid a repeat of 2008.

There’s another great slate of college football games this weekend. The matchups are set and teams are prepared. It should be interesting to see if any upsets can be pulled by the underdogs. The conference schedules are starting, the games are more important. It’s time to start putting together big wins by the major programs for the BCS rankings that begin in a few weeks.
