Scouting the 2011 NFL Draft:

Author: Michael Licata

Is it too early to start looking at next year's NFL prospects for the 2011 Draft? Probably, but it's going to be interesting to see which prospect now falters a bit during the season and which unknown emerges as a candidate for the first round of the NFL Draft.

Most scouting departments take the next few weeks off, preparing a comprehensive lists of top prospects in their regions. The top prospect on most lists is Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker. Many insiders thought Locker would be the first overall pick in the 2010 draft instead of Sam Bradford. He decided to stay in college and it probably was a good idea if there's no rookie salary cap. Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett is the other top quarterback available in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Locker and Mallet might be joined by Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Luck is believed to be a better prospect, but it's uncertain if he'll declare for the 2011 or 2012 NFL Draft. Both Locker and Luck are coached by great coaches in Steve Sarkisian and Jim Harbaugh respectively. They should both be given the opportunity to perform at the NFL level. If your team didn't draft the quarterback of the future in 2010, expect the 2011 class to be as strong as some previous QB draft classes. Mallett might be the best of the bunch. He previously started at Michigan before transferring to Arkansas. T

The top two wide receivers, Julio Jones and A.J. Green could be two of the best players to come out in a while. Jones was heavily recruited out of high school and shined under Nick Saban. Green plays for Georgia and should be considered a top five pick next year. The common theme is that the players all come from the two biggest conferences in college football, the Pac 10 or SEC. Forget the Big Ten, fans are tired of watching Ohio State get to BCS National Championship games only to get destroyed by a SEC or Pac 10 team.

These are the best prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft. Could these quarterbacks develop into the same class as the 1983 draft class? We'll see. If you team didn't draft their franchise player for the next decade in 2010, there's always 2011.
