It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Fans, it’s time for the NFL regular season. The next four months means pouring over potential matchups for offensive stars against hard noise defenses. It means which injuries are going to change the landscape of the league. The season started last night in a rematch of the NFC Championship from a year ago. The New Orleans Saints hosted the Minnesota Vikings. It was a pregame celebration for the ages, as they unveiled the championship banners along with getting their championship rings. It was all business after the kickoff. The Saints finished off the Vikings, 14-9 to open the NFL regular season.

The Saints came out flying, going 77 yards on the first drive for a touchdown. Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees seemed to be in midseason form, throwing for 148 yards in the first half. They only ran the ball three times for nine yards in the first half. It didn’t prevent Brett Favre from engineering two scoring drives to take a 9-7 lead into halftime. The Saints came out more balanced, as Pierre Thomas scored on plunge from the one yard line to go ahead 14-9 early in the second half. It was a more balanced attack. It’s key, one dimensional offenses don’t succeed. They can put up a lot of stats, but it rarely leads to points in the NFL.

Brett Favre seemed to be very tentative when he dropped back on passing downs. His most reliable target was tight end , Visanthe Shiancoe. Sidney Rice being out of the lineup means Favre must develop a reliable relationship with a wide receiver and it hasn’t happened yet. Shiancoe didn’t have a catch in the second half. It doomed the Vikings as they couldn’t muster anything offensively in the second half. It was a exploratory game as both teams had to find rhythm offensively. The Saints made the second half adjustments to limit Siancoe’s effect in the second half. It limited what Favre could do and it showed. Brees and the running game helped the Saints ice the game. The Saints also proved they could play a tight game without scoring 30 plus points to win a game.

It’s a great way to start the season. For most fans, their team starts on Sunday with some great matchups. The NFL’s here folks, enjoy the next four months of football.
