As Revis Goes, So Do The Jets Hopes:

It's an interesting saga. Will Darrelle Revis report in
time for week one against the Baltimore Ravens? It's the most pressing
question for the New York Jets as they prepare for the 2011 season. There has
been a complete media blackout regarding the contract discussion between New
York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and Revis' camp. It was agreed upon between the
two parties. That hasn't led to an end of rampant speculation and stories of
Revis showing up to Florham Park, NJ to practice and play with the Jets. All
of which turned out to be untrue. There might be one truth in all the
reports, that Revis wants $30 million in guaranteed money in the new
contract. Reports state that the Jets are willing to give him $20 million.
I understand the two parties are at an impasse. It is possible that Revis
will sit out into the regular season. The Jets prepared for such an instance
when they drafted cornerback Kyle Wilson in the first round of the 2010 NFL
Draft. They also brought in former Pro Bowler Antonio Cromartie. The
expected a lengthy hold out from Revis with that move alone. Head Coach Rex
Ryan loves to draft up exotic blitzes for his linebackers and safeties. He's
going to have to dial those down without Revis in the lineup. He was the
Jets best player last season and he will be once he rejoins the team. Ryan
can't call those blitz packages without Revis. Revis limits the oppositions
passing game because he takes away their best wide receiver for most of the
game. Teams understand that throwing near Revis means it might end up
incomplete or intercepted. He also doesn't need safety help over the top,
meaning other members of the secondary are free to blitz with the
linebackers. Revis provides so many options because he's that influential on
what the Jets want to do on defense. He deserves a new contract, to become
the highest paid defensive back in the league because he's the best player
at that position.
The Jets have one of the best defenses in the league. Calvin Pace is going
to miss a few games, veteran Jason Taylor is going to sub for Pace at the
outside linebacker position, but the drop off is going to be in the run
defense. The offense presents another grave concern for Jets fans. Mark
Sanchez took the team all the way to the AFC Championship game with a great
defense and limiting the mistakes he made running the offense. This season,
more is expected but it's unclear whether he can deliver. There is always a
drop off after a rookie season in the NFL. Opposition has more game film to
go over. Sanchez hasn't proven he can win football games either. He's going
to get more help with the addition of Santonio Holmes and LaDanian
Tomlinson. Holmes is going to miss the first four games due to suspension.
The Jets are going to run the ball a lot. Shonn Greene will get most of the
workload after not bringing Thomas Jones back this season.
The Jets will be a great team. They might even win the AFC East. Don't
expect them to make it that far in the playoffs. Sanchez will have some
setbacks during a small sophomore slump. It's not going to make that much of
an impact. he has to learn how to rely on his quality receivers in Braylon
Edwards and Holmes. Dustin Keller is a solid receiving option The defense
will always be great. What they plan on doing with the defense depends on
when Darrelle Revis rejoins the team. The Jets will win 10 games next year,
but lose the division to the New England Patriots.
