Red Sox Add Crawford, Will Lee Land With Yankees?

It’s another arms race that is happening between the Boston
Red Sox and New York Yankees. The Red Sox reloaded their lineup through a
trade for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and signing outfielder Carl
Crawford. Crawford was the most coveted position player in free agency this
offseason. He signed a seven year contract for $142 million. It’s known that
Gonzalez will also get a seven year contract extension, announced after the
start of the regular season.
The Yankees are in pursuit of the top free agent pitcher, Cliff Lee. Lee
hasn’t decided between the Yankees and the Texas Rangers. The Rangers
understood going into the offseason they would have to compete with the
Yankees for Lee’s services. They don’t have the money to match the Yankees.
The Crawford signing makes everything more urgent for the Yankees. They want
to sign Lee fast. They also want to find another impact position player.
Crawford was the class of the free agents available.
The MLB needs the Yankees and Red Sox to get into a race for players.
Whenever the two teams compete at the highest level, television ratings
soar. Fans of the other MLB franchises complain about the amount of money
spent by the Red Sox and Yankees. They want more competitive balance, but
it’s not good for the game. The Red Sox are the clear favorite heading into
the regular season. If the Yankees land Lee, expect both teams to be evenly
matched. It’s only November, but I can’t wait for Spring Training.
