Proposed Rules Water Down Game:

The NFL owner’s are meeting in New Orleans. the competition committee issued new possible rule changes along with the continued debate of a new collective bargaining agreement. The committee unveiled its latest plans to keep players safe. They proposed moving the ball to the 35 yard line on kickoffs and a touch back would put the ball at the 25 yard line instead of the 20 yard line. They also want to eliminate the two man wedge. This hasn’t gone into effect yet, but it’s on the table and there will likely be some adjustments to the rules.

It means more touchbacks by the dangerous return men of the NFL. It will take away a vital part of the game along with some of the most exciting, game changing moments. Guys like Leon Washington, Josh Cribbs and Devin Hester could see their roles significantly diminished with the new rules. That’s a crime. Watching the kickoffs is the most exciting play because of the effect it has on both teams.

A lot of coaches are coming out against the proposed rules. Most are traditionalists that don’t want to see the game water downed by rules. Guys make a living from returning kicks and making tackles on special teams. They would have reduced roles and the game would suffer. The owners need to be concerned about the player’s safety, but this measurement would taking it too far. Moving the kickoff point and giving more yardage for touch backs will only slow the game down and less exciting play.
