Prime Time Draft Evaluation:

The experiment begins. It should be interesting to see the
Nielsen Ratings after the first round gets broadcast in prime time for the
first time. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to have the draft in
prime time to make it more watched than it already is, which isn't hard. Die
hard fans pour over mock drafts for weeks after the combine to see which
player fits their team's needs. It's just such an unwatchable experience for
non-football fans. Seriously, who wants to watch talking heads debate which
player will have the most impact for six hours?
Drafting isn't an exact science. Teams that have figured it out use the
draft not to reload, but prepare for the near future when current
undervalued players become stars, garnering huge free agent contracts.
Indianapolis Colts general manager Bill Polian masters the art of retooling
through the draft. The Colts scouting staff found Pierre Garcon, knew he
could play in the NFL and he turned out to be a great addition in the late
rounds of the draft. Polian usually targets defensive players in the first
couple rounds of the draft. The defending champs also do a great job of
retooling through the draft. They found number one receiver Marques Colston
in the seventh round. They've found gems, but their team was built through
free agency and signing players at key positions.
Bill Belichick evaluates talent well. He gambled on Michigan's Tom Brady and
that worked out pretty well. O.J. Mayo turned out to be a great draft pick
too. Some think he relies on reloading key positions in the draft, replacing
aging veterans with younger talent that haven't quite mastered the game yet.
It's why the Patriots can't seem to get back to being in the elite team in
the NFL again. The draft is full of intrigue and wonder, we'll see which
player becomes a bust and which player dazzles, but it doesn't mean anything
until at least the preseason, when teams take snaps against other teams.
There's reasons being why the same teams draft towards the top of the draft.
They under perform all the time and rarely seem to hit it big with a draft
class. Teams aren't evaluated on just one player, it takes three years to
judge a complete class. By that time, the coaches may have changed along
with some of the front office people.
