Phillies Rotation Going to Make Its Case for Best in Baseball History

Can you imagine facing the 2011 Philadelphia Phillies
pitching staff? It’s a tough task for any team in the National League next
season. Cliff Lee spurned more money from the Texas Rangers and New York
Yankees to sign the the Phillies. It was the same team that traded Lee a
year ago because they didn’t think they could sign him long term. He proved
everybody wrong. Now, the Yankees and Rangers are left scrambling to bring
in another front line starter, but the pickins are slim.
Roy Halladay, Lee, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels will take the mound for the
Phillies next season. Having four aces seems extremely unfair to the other
NL teams. Are they the best rotation in the the modern era? Many have
speculated but until the season starts, it’s going to be a great unknown.
The ‘93 Atlanta Braves comes the closest. That offseason, another storied
pitcher spurned the Yankees to sign with the Braves, Greg Maddux. Maddux
joined a stellar pitching staff consistent of Tom Glavin and, John Smoltz.
Those guys together formed a great rotation and won the Braves a World
Series.
Right now, it’s just four guys on a roster for the 2011 baseball season. A
lot could change. Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt and Lee could be the best staff
in MLB history. The Phillies expect to walk away with the NL East division.
They’ve become like the Boston Red Sox and Yankees, they expect to make it
to the World Series every year. They fell short against the Giants in 2010.
Adding the best post season pitcher this era should help them get over the
hump. If they don’t win 110 games and the World Series next season, it would
be a true disappointment for Phillies fans.
