It’s the start of something great. Major League Baseball
begins play on Thursday, meaning every team is alive for a post season
berth. The usual suspects are still the sheik picks to go all the way to the
World Series in October. The Boston Red Sox reloaded their lineup with the
additions of Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. The Philadelphia Phillies
made the largest slash in free agency, signing ace Cliff Lee, joining Cole
Hamels, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Joe Blanton as the most imposing
rotation in the modern area.
The Phillies are starting the season down with some key parts. Second
baseman Chase Utley will miss a couple of weeks. He hasn’t played all spring
and it’s unknown when he’ll be ready for the regular season. Closer Brad
Lidge will be placed on the 15-day disabled list to start the season. Jose
Contreras will take over the closer role while Lidge recuperates. It’s
unlikely the Phillies will shoot out to a huge lead in the NL East, but the
rotation is going to keep the team in contention for the entire season.
The New York Yankees lost out on the Lee sweepstakes. The result is relying
on retreads Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon to get a shot at starting for
the Yankees this season. There are too many questions on the Yankees The San
Francisco Giants are the defending champs and they’re returning a stellar
rotation. Opening Day means warmer weather, hot dogs and great summer nights
spent watching America’s Pastime.
