Oregon and Ohio State Destined for Glendale Meeting

Sundays are usually reserved for professional football.
Fans sit in front of the television watching the best athletes compete at
the top level of a great sport. There’s also something happening this Sunday
and the following Sundays that will ripple throughout football. The Bowl
Championship Series will release its first standings at 8:15 p.m. Sunday
night on ESPN. Teams have to campaign for the top spots in the rankings,
using their strength of schedule, margin of victory and other computer
rankings. The top two teams in the final BCS standings released on December
5 will meet in Glendale, AZ for the BCS National Championship game.
The few BCS experts that exist believe that Boise State will sit atop the
rankings when they’re released if they win their game Saturday night.
Currently, they’re ranked third in the A.P. and Coaches poll behind Oregon
and Ohio State. The Broncos are the best example of why there should be a
playoff system in college football, but that’s a column for another day.
Boise State isn’t going to make the national championship game. Their
schedule isn’t strong enough and teams in the large conferences will go
undefeated to make the national championship game.
The Buckeyes and Ducks seemed destined to meet in Glendale. Oregon has some
important games against Arizona and Southern Cal. USC is always a tough team
to play, especially as spoilers this season. The Wildcats are a solid team
with a good defense. The Ducks have shown to be one of the best teams in the
country. Their offense can score on any defense and they did win the Pac 10
title last year. They’re gunning for the national title this season.
The Buckeyes are trying to remove the stigma that comes with not winning a
BCS bowl in a couple of years. They played for the national championship in
2007 and 08, losing to Florida and LSU by a combined 41 points in two easy
victories for the opposing team. This year, Terrelle Pryor is becoming a
great passer. It also helps that they beat a ranked Miami (FL) in
non-conference. Their road to Glendale is tougher than Oregon’s road. They
travel to Madison to take on a ranked Wisconsin team this weekend. They also
have to travel to Iowa later this season.
Sundays have always been reserved for the NFL. Starting this weekend, the
weekly BCS rankings will play a predominant number two feature. Football is
a great sport.BCS means huge dollars for the universities. The championship
is in Glendale. If both teams go undefeated, expect a great match up between
Oregon and Ohio State this season.
