Officials Having a Greater Impact on the Outcome of Games:

The U.S. Men's National Team still has an opportunity to
make it past the group stage of the 2010 World Cup. After nearly a week off,
the U.S. tied Slovenia in a gutsy performance that was mired by a referee's
decision to call a foul during what was the game-winning goal by Maurice Edu.
No reason was given by the referee for blowing the whistle. U.S. captain
Carlos Bocanegra had to restrain Jozy Altidore immediately following the
goal.
This seems to be just another part of a growing trend in sports where the
referee seems to have a larger and larger impact on the outcome of the game.
Jim Joyce immediately following the game realized he cost Armando Galarraga
a perfect game in the final out. Joyce blamed the quickness of the play as
the reason he called the runner safe and not out. That's a lousy excuse.
Umpires, referees and officials should be used to the speed of the game.
They should expect something to happen and analyze the scenario faster
because they're used to the speed of what's going on on the field.
Fans should be weary about referees intentions after the Tim Donaghy scandal
rocked the NBA. Officials should also know not to be part of the history of
the outcome, just analyze what happened if there's a replay or what's
happening while the play is taking place. It's poor for the sport if the
official has such an effect as in the Joyce and the U.S. Men's outcome.
