Notre Dame and Army Collide in Classic Match Up At Yankee Stadium

An old tradition is returning to Yankee Stadium on Saturday
night. Army will take on Notre Dame for the first time in New York since
1969. I’m not old enough to remember when the rivalry was even relevant. I
do appreciate history and this rivalry was one of the fiercest in all of
college football up through the mid 1940s. It was so intense that Army
decided to end the series for a decade because of the hate towards Army. The
higher ups at Army decided that the torment received from Notre Dame’s fans
was too much to bear. They also thought it was beginning to overshadow the
Army/Navy rivalry.
The series began in 1913. Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy fueled a lot of the
hatred against Army as Irish coaches. It was at Yankee Stadium were Rockne
gave the classic “Win One for the Gipper” during the 1928 Army/Notre Dame
contest. It’s going to be a great way to return to a classic rivalry which
college football was built. There are some other classic games happening
around college football too.
Ohio State travels to Iowa in a Big Ten match up. Ole Miss heads to Baton
Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers. It’s also the Cal/Stanford battle for
bragging rights in Northern California. It’s going to be another solid
weekend of college football. All the favorites should win their games this
weekend. Oregon is still clearly the best team in the country. Auburn, with
all the Cam Newton drama going around, could slip up one of these weeks, but
it most likely will happen during the SEC Championship game, not this
weekend.
