NHL Playoffs, Hard Sell to the Casual Fan:

The National Hockey League gets a nice change this year.
The defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated in
game seven against the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal entered the NHL Playoffs
as the eighth seed, squeaking in with only one point over the New York
Rangers. The Detroit Red Wings were eliminated this season, so fans won't
see the last two Stanley Cup Finals.
Most hockey fans are hardcore that follows every move their team makes. The
league hasn't been able to utilize all the hype from the Olympics.
Commissioner Gary Bettman must figure out how to sell stars. It's not good
for the league when Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby aren't in the playoffs
any more. It's even worse if a Canadian team gets to the Finals. People
don't watch. Montreal has a great team and they're fun to watch.
The Boston Bruins are still alive, they're not a fun team to watch. They're
offense took until the playoffs to show up. They play great defense with
Zdeno Chara, but it's not fun to watch. The NHL needs scorers and more of
them. The Chicago Blackhawks provide a lot of entertainment when watching
the playoffs. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are great forwards that can
score goals. It also helps that Chicago is the third largest television
market. San Jose is another team that can score. The Western Conference
Finals with Chicago against San Jose should feature a lot of scoring and the
goalies not looking that great.
It's hard to find the playoffs on television too. It's on Versus and the
Finals will be on NBC. Hopefully, the casually fan will find the NHL and the
ratings will be better this Finals than in previous seasons. The NHL is a
hard product to sell. The names are out of the playoffs but the best teams
remain.
