NFL Mulling Move to 18 Game Regular Season:

Author: Michael Licata
Date: 8//27/2010

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did a good thing to sooth the players this past week. He didn't hold a vote during the owner's meetings taking place in Atlanta. There were two major developments, the approval of the majority ownership of the St. Louis Rams to Stan Kroenke and the voting of adding two games to the regular season, making it 18 games instead of 16. There would be no additional preseason games added, just two games become part of the regular season.

The owners are in love with the idea. It's one more game that's guaranteed to sell out. There's never really a guarantee that preseason games sell out. The fans love the idea because they're tired of paying full price for a ticket for a meaningless game. The only opposition comes from the players. They state that the current grind of 16 games is already too much to endure and if they go through another two weeks, it's going to be even more taxing. It's a valid point and Goodell is doing a good job of soothing the player's concerns. It's going to be a hard fight between the two sides in the next round of collective bargaining. The switch in scheduling is one important arguing point between Goodell and DeMaurice Smith, the head of the player's union.

Some other things to figure out when to start the season. If they start before Labor Day, then the fans will still be on vacation. If they start the season later, it runs into the northern team facing weather conditions. It would be interesting to see if they could push the Super Bowl back to President's Day. It would make the event the true holiday that it deserves. The players will eventually come around to the prospect of playing 18 games during the regular season.

The interesting part is when will it start? Many of the owners believe the move will start in 2012 because of the impending lockout in 2011. It's luminous because it would be such a shock to not have a season or to watch replacement players. Goodell must learn now how to sooth the players feelings in preparation for a long agreement process that must begin soon. All fans would lose out if the best athletes aren't partaking in the NFL. The 18 game schedule will come to fruition and it will probably be part of the new collective bargaining agreement once it gets settled between Smith and Goodell.
