NFL Has Too Many Preseason Games:

The new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and
its players will have a lot of sweeping changes. Let's just hope a season
isn't lost because the two sides cannot agree on the finer points. One thing
that does need to be changed, and most likely will be is the expansion of
the regular season to 18 games instead of 16. It would eliminate two
preseason games and add them to the regular season.
The players are on board with the idea. It would shorten training camp. Most
players that have been in the league more than two years don't like training
camp. Teams understand that veterans don't like being away from their
families for such extended periods of time. It's a reason why some
franchises choose to train in the same place where they train during the
regular season. Training camp is an ancient marketing tool to drum up
interest in teams. It doesn't always work. It has become a kids fan
experience, with extra games and autograph sessions scheduled after every
practice. If you need more definite proof the NFL doesn't need more than two
preseason games, look at the stats from two of the best quarterbacks in the
league. Tom Brady went 10-12 with a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons.
It's not that impressive, but the completion percentage should show that
Brady's ready for the regular season. He doesn't need two more weeks of
meaningless football. Peyton Manning went 8-15 with a touchdown and
interception against the Buffalo Bills.
The Colts have been notorious for playing extremely poor in the pre-season.
They didn't win a game in the preseason on their way to winning Super Bowl
41. The preseason games are unwatchable for all but the diehard fans. The
position coaches analyze each back up players at their positions and make
suggestions on whether or not the given player can contribute on special
teams. Rookies don't even need the time during games to get ready. It's live
action that they can't get on the practice field or in the meeting room, but
they should only get two games to prove themselves, four's unnecessary.
There's a lot to be worked out between the NFLPA and the owners. One thing
that both sides can agree on is making the schedule 18 games instead of 16
games. The owners would get two more sellouts. Players would get shortened
training camps and fans wouldn't have to see preseason football at the price
of a regular season ticket. It's something all NFL fans would like to see.
