New NCAA Tournament Format Announced:

The NCAA unveiled its latest shake up to the best post
season tournament in sports. Tournament Chairman Matt Guerrero announced
that four teams would have to play each other for the right to enter the
traditional 64-team tournament. The games will be played on Tuesday or
Wednesday after Selection Sunday. The winners will advance to games on
Thursday or Friday. The tradition tournament, with 16 first round games
starts on Saturday and Sunday.
The other elements of the tournament will remain the same, the Sweet 16,
Elite 8 and Final Four will all go one without a hitch. The Final Four will
happen in Houston at Reliant Stadium in April 2011. The early round games
will air on TruTV after a new television deal with Turner, CBS and TBS are
in the first year of a 14-year agreement. So, don't really expect a change
in the tournament until the TV contract is up, unless the power conferences
get really greedy, which is always possible. The selection committee will be
able to choose 37 at-large teams instead of 34.
More teams means less of a chance for upset. All the regular fans watch the
first two games for the Cinderella team that makes it to the Sweet 16. It so
a well coached senior led Cornell Big Red can defeat top tiered teams on the
way to the Sweet 16. George Mason can make it all the way to the Final Four.
More teams eliminates the chance for events like this to happen. The
tournament's been watered down, but not to the extent of 96 teams, just 68.
Most casual fans will watch no matter which teams make it how far. The
upsets just won't be there. It should be interesting because the ratings for
the tournament haven't been that strong with the advent of online viewing
and TiVo. Advertisers spend the money because they know their target
audience is watching. So, this Spring, get ready for a watered-down version
of the greatest post season tournament in all of sports.
