NBA weekly review:

The National Basketball Association, more than other major
sports, is driven by its stars. NBA players are arguably the most physically
gifted athletes around. Franchises are often built around on player, but
championship teams are done with one or two top talents and a quality
supporting cast.
Kobe Bryant leads the Los Angeles Lakers, he's truly one of the greats, but
his cast includes Pau Gasol and the emerging Andrew Bynum. The Lakers lead
the Western Conference and are expected to contend for a championship. The
Lakers are led by head coach Phil Jackson. Jackson really might be one of
the top coaches, of any sport because of his ability to motivate top
athletes and win championships.
The Denver Nuggets sit second behind the Lakers in the NBA standings,
Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups are a good duo tha could lead the
Nuggets far into the playoffs. There are som really good teams that could
pull some upsets in the early playoff rounds. The Oklahoma City Thunder
could surprise some teams and knock out one of the stalwarts, like San
Antonio or Dallas.
The Cleveland Cavaliers led the Eastern Conference. Lebron James and his
gang are looking to make it back to the NBA Finals after losing to Dwight
Howard and the Orlando Magic in last season's conference finals. James
really might be the best to ever play the game, but he wants a ring more
than anything now. Forget this upcoming free agency period, James and the
Cavs are poised to make and run to get King James his first of what could
possibly be many NBA titles.
The competition in the Eastern Conference should be better than in recent
years. The Magic still look like a world class team, the Boston Celtics are
still good and Atlanta is learning how to win games. They might upset some
teams in the playoffs too. It should be a competitive playoffs this summer.
The NBA used have the problem of unbalanced conference, where the West
playoffs were the challenge and whom ever cam from the East was suppose to
roll over in the Finals. It's not the case anymore, the Celtics beat the
Lakers two seasons ago and the Cavs are the best team in the league. I think
that the competitive imbalance lies in the lower tier teams that continually
cellar dwell at the bottom of the standings.
NBA executives and general managers continue to tweak and update their
rosters through the draft and free agency. The draft lottery doesn't
guarantee the top pick for the worst teams. This off season is going to see
a lot of potential superstars leaving their current teams and go to low
level franchises. The New York Knicks will look to add at least one max
contract. It's most likely going to be Chris Bosh. James would be foolish to
try and rebuild an entire franchise...again. Amare Stoudemire looks to be
headed to Miami, if the Heat retain Dwayne Wade then look for the Heat to
enter the Eastern Conference's elite teams. This is a gamble that desperate
teams are willing to take to improve instantly. The posturing by teams to
game plan for this upcoming offseason has been going on for a few years now.
It might not work for the likes of the Knicks and New Jersey Nets.
The NBA would like to see the fanbases in the New York metro area get
excited about their team. It's important for ratings when the Knicks and
Nets are playing well. This is going to take a few years down the road. The
league has stars and will continue to flourish for as long as James and Kobe
decide to play. It should be a quality playoffs and one team can ride a hot
streak all the way to the Finals.
