NBA Heading for a Work Stoppage:

It looks like the bliss that exists from LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and all the other NBA players might come crashing down. NBA league commissioner David Stern recently claimed the league lost $370 million last season. NBAPA President Billy Hunter thinks that's completely off. He points to increased season ticket sales in many venues, along with the television ratings for the NBA Finals being the highest in 12 years. Hunter also points to the gloomy forecast of a $50 million cap next season, which turned out to be false, the cap will be at $58 million.

Hunter is preparing his members for a lockout. It would be the first work stoppage since 1998-99. It would be ashamed if the league were to disrupt the positive trends set forth by Kobe Bryant, James and the other emerging stars. Hunter submitted a proposal that keeps to the standard, but the owners want a hard cap and better distribute the revenue among the franchises. Hunter wants to expand the revenue sharing, making it a an integral process of the next collective bargaining agreement.

It's really unclear which side is right on these negotiations. It is ludicrous at the contracts that some players get. They're not worth it. The owners see their mistakes and must enforce new policies to change the spending culture. It should be interesting which side makes concessions first. Work stoppages in sports usually favor the owners, because of their vast funds. It might be different in the NBA. It's more individually based than the other three major sports. So, a lockout is looming, hopefully a work stoppage can be avoided.
