NBA Basketball Free Agency:

Author: Michael Licata
Date: 04/04/2010

One potential summer 2010 NBA free agent is off the market. It was a long shot, but Kobe Bryant may have opted out of his current contract and gone to seek employment elsewhere. He resigned with the Lakers for three years making nearly $90 million for the length of the contract.

Bryant established himself as one of the top two players in the league. The debate on who's better between him and LeBron James could be argued for a long time. Bryant gets the edge because of his four rings to James' zero. Bryant wanted to stay in Los Angeles. He probably never considered leaving but it still lingered.

The Lakers should contend as long as Bryant suits up every night. Pau Gasol was resigned too and they form a quality tandem. If Andrew Bynum continues to learn how to play big, they should contend for quite a long time.

The argument could be made that LeBron James needs to revive the New York Knicks franchise in order to become the game's best player. It's false. He wants to win championships, not rebuild entire franchises. Yes, the Knicks freed up enough cap space to sign two maximum contracts and maybe Chris Bosh would follow James to the Knicks. The likelihood of that happening is slim to none. Bosh will probably relocate because Toronto's been a floundering franchise that's never really made the commitment to become one of the league's elite team.

Knicks fans want to see James in the orange and blue number six Knicks jersey. It would make basketball relevant in the biggest market. James does a great job of handling the media. The catch with that is he plays in Cleveland, where there isn't too many publications. The fanbase would also become impatient if he didn't deliver right away.

Amare Stoudemire is another important free agent this upcoming offseason. Stoudemire's never outright stated where he wants to play next year. It's no secret that he loves South Beach and could team with DeWayne Wade and the Miami Heat. That would provide a great tandem that could see the Heat win a few more championships.

This offseason, the NBA landscape is going to change. Some teams are going to get better and we could see a balance shift in both the Eastern and Western Conference. One team poised to continue dominance, the Los Angeles Lakers did the right thing and signed their franchise player for three more seasons. James will probably continue to play in Cleveland, Bosh will go to the Knicks and Stoudemire will go to Miami to play with Wade.
