Nationals Using Rays Approach with Strasburg:
| Author: Michael Licata |

Steven Strasburg shined in his debut at Triple A Syracuse.
He pitched seven scoreless innings, on route to a 7-0 win over the Gwinnett
Braves. He allowed one hit and struck out six batters against a solid Braves
roster. His fastball reached 99 miles per hour. His combined ERA this season
is 1.29 between AA and AAA. He's going to make his major league debut this
season.
He's MLB ready but by waiting till June allows the Washington Nationals to
keep him around an extra season because his arbitration clock starts later.
This rule kept Evan Longoria in the minors a little while longer for the
Tampa Rays. He's proved that some extra time in the minors allow players to
mature. They get the opportunity to learn how to be a professional baseball
player. This definitely applies to most AAA players.
Triple A teams usually travel in style and live in lavish hotels in quality
baseball towns where fans turn out to see good baseball teams. It pails in
comparison to the Majors though. Strasburg will be fine for this season.
He'll play out his enormous contract as the number one player selected in
last June's draft. It should be interesting to see if the Nationals, with
all their high draft picks and quality pitching in the minors translates
into a winning mentality. That's something that the Nationals haven't had
since, probably ever. Their futility is well documented, misspelling their
Nationals on their jerseys, various other mishaps that strike a losing
franchise.
Strasburg will provide some excitement for Nationals fans, but he probably
won't stay that long if the team doesn't win games. Smaller market teams
will follow the formula set forth by the Tampa Rays. Trade for defense and
keep cornerstone players in the minors a little while longer helps in the
long term.
