Miami Looking For Return to Elite Status:

It’s unsure about the effects of one game can have on most college football programs. That’s not really the case for the Miami Hurricanes. The Canes are looking for a way to becoming an elite program again. It may start against the program that caused the major set back, against Ohio State. It’s going to be a tough task because the game’s at the Horseshoe.

Most fans remember the 2002 Fiesta Bowl, when a controversial call kept the Canes from winning back-to-back National Championships. The team then went to another BCS bowl the following year, but it hasn’t been back since. It contributed to a downward spiral that saw the firing of head coach Larry Coker. Current head coach Randy Shannon’s first year at the helm saw the team at 5-7.

The game against the Buckeyes on Saturday presents so much more than revenge. Current players have spoken to former Hurricanes and the theme seems to be just win and return among the elite in college football. Shannon’s downplayed the revenge theme, but he understands the implications of the game. It’s a great opportunity to prove they’re back.

The Buckeyes won’t be an easy win, the number two ranked team in the country has Terrell Pryor, a leading Heisman candidate along with a solid defense. If Miami (FL) pulls the upset, it should be interesting to see the ripple effects in the poles. Many fans argue the Big Ten champs choke on the large stage in recent years, and it’s somewhat true. They want to prove themselves against quality opponents from other conferences.

The Hurricanes are looking to return to the elite college football programs. They’ll get a great gauge as to how far they’ve come on Saturday when they play the Buckeyes in Columbus. It’s just one game in a great docket of football this weekend.
