Manny Set to Join White Sox August 31:

The Chicago White Sox hope that Manny Ramirez has one more push left in him.
Ramirez has worn out his welcome in Los Angeles and the Dodgers put him on
waivers for the White Sox to pick up. Chicago hopes to get the player that
can spend the final month of the baseball season pushing the White Sox
towards the playoffs. They are 4.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins for
first place in the American League Central.
It was a nasty ending for Ramirez in Los Angeles, just like when he left the
Boston Red Sox. He's missed 65 games this season for the Dodgers with
various leg ailments. It's really unknown if he was actually injured It
ended in a bizarre way reserved for Manny. He was ejected this past Sunday
after a one pitch at bat. It was the final straw for the franchise that
embraced Ramirez like no other in 2008. He came into Dodgerland with a
flourish, led the team to the playoffs with staggering numbers over the last
two months of the 08 season, .396 batting average, .763 slugging percentage
and 17 homers in 187 at-bats.
Ramirez tested positive for a banned substance, a women's fertility drug,
served his 50 game suspension and really hasn't been the same Manny that
struck fear in the opposing teams. His numbers declined somewhat. The
problem during his final few years for the Dodgers was his lack of interest
in playing the field. He was benched for five games just a few weeks ago,
which led to the waiver wire. The ejection was the "enough is enough" point
for the second time in his career.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen will welcome Manny with open arms. They hope
he can lead the team to the playoffs. He won't have to play left field, just
act as the designated hitter. He might put up huge numbers to catch the
Twins. It's not impossible, but the wild card spot isn't an option if they
don't catch the Twins. It should be an interesting experiment to see if
Manny can rekindle the magic from those Red Sox and early Dodger days. He's
great on the short term, just don't plan on keeping him around for too long,
it will be another early exit. Let's hope he thinks about retiring too, he's
not going to be more than a DH for the rest of his career. Hopefully, he can
go out gracefully, with the dignity and honor he deserves. But hey, every
one loves watching a train wreck too.
