Kaymer Wins PGA Championship After Playoff:

The 2010 PGA Championship will be remembered for the three
hole playoff as much as the mistake by Dustin Johnson. Martin Kaymer won the
playoff against Bubba Watson. It was the first major for the 25-year old.
Johnson was the story on Sunday at Whistling Straits. Johnson had a one shot
lead heading into the 18th hole. He drove into a small sand trap, grounded
his club unaware of his ball placement. He pared the final hole, thinking he
would partake in the playoffs, only to suffer a two stroke penalty, turning
his 71 into a 73 and losing a chance at his first major.
It didn't take away too much from Kraymer. The impressive German sunk a
15-foot putt to tie Watson at 11-under for the tournament. Kaymer made a
15-foot put on the par 3 17th hole to improve his chances of winning the
tournament. He shot a 2-under 70 on Sunday. Watson had a chance to close out
the tournament and avoid a playoff, but he imploded during crunch time.
Watson went from the right rough, into water then over the green into a
bunker, finishing the whole with a double bogey. Watson's disappointment was
softened by the news that he played his way onto the Ryder Cup team for the
U.S.
Kaymer won the playoff hole by a two-putt bogey. It wasn't the prettiest of
victories. It lacked big names, but some one had to win and it was the first
time for Kaymer at a major championship. Kaymer moved to third in the Ryder
Cup standings for Europe, along with moving up to the fifth-ranked golfer.
There was a lull in excitement for this year's PGA Championship, until the
final hour of competition. It was the final major tournament of the season
and without the high profile that is Tiger Woods. Woods finished and left
ahead of the fireworks, finishing in 28th place.
It looks like the bunkers at Whistling Straits took center stage at the
tournament. The PGA Tour put up a sign in the locker room stating that all
bunkers on the course would be treated as hazards. Nick Watney, the leader
after three days, entered Sunday with a three stroke lead. He double bogeyed
the first hole and lost the lead for good on the seventh tee. The shot went
off the rocks and into Lake Michigan. He finished with a 9-over on the day,
finishing the tournament in 18th place. The Sunday meltdown will likely lead
to a missed spot on the Ryder Cup team. Johnson now has two close at majors,
all in one season. It was a chance for some new faces to enter the
conscience of the average golf fan. Once again, the course seemed to become
the star of the tournament.
