It’s a sharp contrast this week in the NFL. Last week, in
preparation for the AFC Divisional round, the New York Jets and New England
Patriots spewed venom on each other and it played out in the tabloid
newspapers in each town. For this week’s AFC Championship game against the
Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets head coach Rex Ryan has been calm and warm.
It’s interesting to see this outspoken team fuel their motivation inside
themselves instead of turning their opponents into monsters or enemies by
calling every game personal.
The Jets are an experienced group. The team made it to the AFC Championship
game last season. It’s nothing new to them. They have a better team with
Santonio Holmes and LaDanian Tomlinson on offense. The team had a mistake
free practice this week in preparation for the game against the Steelers.
It’s an important step. This year, the Jets have their own motivation to
succeed. It’s a great sign that the team is growing up, if they’re able to
motivate themselves and not make the weekly match up into a vendetta in the
press.
It’s a sign that the Jets are becoming more respectable. The media loves how
the events played out last week. It’s great fodder for the talk shows and
columnists, but now the reserved also gives them more to talk about because
the game and players take center stage. It won’t be focused on the coaches.
It’s how the game should be played.
