Injuries Take Their Toll on Jets, Packers

The start of the NFL season brings along many different results. Unknown running backs like Arian Foster enter fantasy football lore. Teams figured out what worked against what did not work. Fans saw offensives sputter and shine. One thing that comes from the first game and games after, are injuries.

There are always nicks to key players that means two to four week recovery. There are also injuries that could cripple teams that land important players on injured reserve. The Green Bay Packers have lost starting runningback Ryan Grant for the year due to an ankle injury. The Packers moved quickly to sign a runningback off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad to take Grant’s place in the lineup. The New York Jets lost a key cog in their defense with the loss of Kris Jenkins for the entire season. He tore his anterior crucial ligament for the second time in as many seasons.

Brandon Jackson immediately stepped in against the Philadelphia Eagles and the team still won. It can coast without Grant in the lineup. The offense is still run perfectly by Aaron Rodgers. Jackson is a more than serviceable runningback. He’s going to have to carry the load now without Grant. Rodgers is still the most important part of the offense. He can lead this team to a division crown. The loss of Grant may hinder their chances of making it to Dallas in February for the Super Bowl.

Jenkins will miss a significant portion of the season again. Long term, Jenkins could walk away because of the reoccurring knee injuries. The Jets missed Jenkins last year and still finished number one overall in defense. Sione Pouha and Mike DeVito will have to fill in for Jenkins again. Their also missing Calvin Pace for another few weeks. The Jets will have to get better on the offense first, because the defense can adapt to injuries. The Jets will be fine on defense. It’s the offense that needs to be figured out in order for the Jets to be successful.

Injuries are part of the NFL. The teams that can overcome injuries to important players are the most successful on Sundays. Jenkins and Grant will be missed by their teams. The replacements are ready for their moment to shine. The Jets and Packers are among the elite in the league. Both teams have great coaches to get the backups ready because of injuries.
