Hard To Predict Rookie QB Success:

St. Louis Rams new quarterback Sam Bradford understands, to
start in the NFL, he needs to be in training camp as much as possible. The
team needs Bradford to be in camp to learn the NFL offense. He needs to see
reps against NFL defenses. There are a long list of rookie quarterbacks that
waited too long, signed late and didn't have an impact the first season. The
Cincinnati Bengals did a great job of having Carson Palmer sit behind Jon
Kitna for one season before taking over as the starter. Palmer learned on
the sidelines about what it takes to be a NFL quarterback. Now, he's one of
the best QBs in the league.
NFL franchises rely even more on their quarterbacks now because the game is
so advanced. Arizona is hoping Matt Leinart learned a lot these past few
seasons sitting behind Kurt Warner. He has an important battle against Derek
Anderson for the starting job. Leinart should win the job because he has an
extensive knowledge of Ken Whisenhunt's offensive system. Quarterbacks learn
differently. They must be accountable for every player on each play. The
Buffalo Bills are the other team that has an open QB competition, but it's
not that close. Trent Edwards has the most experience and earned the first
team reps while Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Brohm rotate the second team
reps.
Bradford will start for the Rams next season. He's making too much money not
to start. He's had shoulder problems, but it hasn't shown since the end of
his collegiate career. The other potential rookie starter is Jimmy Clausen
in Carolina. The Panthers will start the season with Matt Moore, but expect
Clausen to see some valuable experience before the end of the regular
season. Colt McCoy will also start behind Jake Delhomme in Cleveland. His
maturation process will take a little longer because McCoy doesn't have the
same physical tools as Clausen. It's hard to predict the success of rookie
quarterbacks, they bring the most hope, while their failures usually set
entire franchises back many years.
