Williams Moves To Nets:

They couldn’t get Carmelo Anthony, so they got a better
point guard and a younger building block for the future. The New Jersey Nets
acquired Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz for Devin Harris and Derrick
Favors along with two first round draft picks. It’s a great short term
solution for the Nets. They gave up less and got a better player than
Anthony. Williams is a great facilitator that can draw defenders and dish
the ball to Brook Lopez and the other Nets scorers.
This solution might be short term. Williams isn’t eligible for a contract
extension until July, which means he can still opt out of the deal in 2012.
This is the first piece for the rebuilding Nets. Anthony Morrow is a great
shooter and will benefit from Williams’ presence, but the rest of the wing
players aren’t very good. They would have to win at least 20 of their last
games to make the playoffs this year and it’s highly unlikely. He needs to
play with at least one other superstar player. There’s a trend in the NBA
for superstars to team up and make the NBA a potentially top heavy league.
The Nets will have to add an elite wing player through free agency. The Jazz
really made out with the deal. They’ll look to unload a few more salaries to
get under the luxury tax. Williams want choose to stay, or he might bolt for
the other teams. The Nets have a bright future with a state-of-the-art arena
in Brooklyn, but that’s 2012, not now and their in-market rivals just had
the biggest night in a decade. Williams is the first piece of rebuilding,
but will he stick around to see the entire process?
