college Athletes & Professional Programs :

Colleges rely on their athletics to make the Universities a lot of money. This leads to the athletes joining the school and having to go to class. Some of these kids really perform well in the classroom, but the football players and basketball players really don't worry about class.

The universities have support staff and many students willing to tutor and help these kids get through classes that are completely irrelevant to their education. They should just play which ever sport they're there to play and collect a pay check for it. It would end the farce that is 'student-athlete'. Kentucky lost five players to the NBA draft, including four freshman. Head coach John Calipari, including his recent classes from Memphis, has sent six one and done players onto the NBA. That's going to help with recruiting. Go to Kentucky, play one year, don't learn how to become a complete player, use your athleticism and get a huge payday when you enter the NBA draft. The problem is that some

The farce is more present in the NBA because of the rule that requires one year in college before entering the NBA. The National Football League makes them stay for at least three years. This helps because players' bodies need to develop and aren't ready to enter the NFL. Those athletes get more attention on campus because football leads the way at all the powerhouse schools. Tim Tebow is a rarity, a solid upbringing led him to be a quality leader that doesn't make poor choices. Fellow quarterback Jimmy Clausen got into a bar fight off campus in South Bend a few years ago. These kids need to act their age without the microscope of being hero of your school and the national spotlight of your school's fan base.

The NCAA would never allow their athletes to get a check, but they should consider it. Schools spend a lot on these athletic programs. Football and basketball fuels all the other programs at schools, but to pay some and not the others would be unfair. Give the students the option of either collecting a check and taking away a portion of their scholarship to pay them instead. There's a solid model to pay the athletes, then let them go to the NBA or NFL after the required time from the collective bargaining agreement.

There's a lot to fix when it comes to draft picks as well. The high draft picks get way too much guaranteed money for not proving their NFL worth yet. There should be a rookie salary cap like the NBA with escalator clauses that provides performance-based incentives, like the other NFL veterans.

The system needs to be fixed, calling basketball and football players that attend class about 3 times during season is a farce. Universities would probably be against the idea, but I think it would make the competition for players better. The money that the NCAA makes is crazy anyway, split between all the top schools.
