Cards Trying Hard to Extend Cornerstone:

This is an important offseason for the St. Louis Cardinals.
They spent a small fortune to retain slugging outfielder Matt Holliday last
offseason, now they have to decide the value of Albert Pujols. There is a
deadline of February 19 for an extension to get done between the two sides.
It’s the day Pujols will report for Spring Training. Pujols stated he
doesn’t want any distraction heading into this season. It’s a great stance
that most of the well respected players take during their careers. What’s
the market for Pujols?
He has a full no-trade clause. He’s also stated he won’t be traded to
another team during the negotiation process. He’s seeking a contract similar
to the one Alex Rodriguez signed with the New York Yankess at 10 years for
$275 million. It’s unclear if he’s going to get a larger contract that
Rodriguez. Pujols is represented by Dan Lozano, not super agent Scott Boras.
There’s two foreseeable options and one would be crushing for Cardinals
fans.
They could sign him to an extension in the range he’s asking or watch him
leave via free agency after this season. The team would get two picks as
compensation but it wouldn’t replace the loss of Pujols. He hit at least 103
RBIs and 32 home runs over the course of his Cards career. He’s a perennial
National League MVP candidate and the heart of the Cardinals. He’s the best
and most feared hitter in the majors. It would be a huge loss with untold
ripples across the league.
