Cards Sweep Leads to A Two Team Race In NL Central:

The St. Louis Cardinals re-established their dominance in
the NL Central by sweeping the Cincinnati Reds. It was a pivotal August
series for the division lead. It was the first three game sweep in
Cincinnati for St. Louis since 2005. It gives the Cardinals a one game
division lead. The series might have be highlighted by an early brawl in the
second game of the series. Reds second baseman Brandon Philips made his
distaste for the Cards very well known. During his first at bat, Phillips
and Cardinals catcher Jose Molina began jawing, which turned into pushing
and shoving. This led to benches clearing and both managers being thrown out
of the game.
It shows that the Reds are incapable of running away with the division. The
Cardinals have the experience and deeper pitching staff. Both teams should
have learned from the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Many give the credit to the brawl
between Jason Varitek and Alex Rodriguez in July of 2004 as the catalyst
that propelled the Red Sox to the World Series title that year. Brawls,
manager ejections help get teams out of funks and propel winning streaks
during the long major league season.
St. Louis has the experience that will help them win the division. The Reds
do have Joey Votto, one of the best hitters in the NL. They're in the top 10
in the four important offensive categories. Aaron Harang is coming back soon
after a DL stint because of a sore back. They also have Aroldis Chapman in
Triple-A Louisville. The Reds bid for the Cuban defector and he's proven a
solid investment in the future. Chapman could come in and join the starting
rotation, that means Harang would move to the bullpen.
The Cardinals looked to add a solid starting pitcher, like Roy Oswalt but
couldn't pull together the right package of prospects. They did land Jake
Westbrook from the Cleveland Indians. Westbrook should thrive in the NL
because it's easier to pitch in the NL than the AL. These additions to both
teams means it should be an interesting final two months of the season. The
NL Central is one of the best races and it might come down to the last week
in the season.
