NCAA has spent a long time trying to clean up its
athletics. Cam Newton is the latest player to be thrown into the spotlight
for alleged recruiting violations. Newton came from junior college to Auburn
after leaving Florida due to allegations Newton stole a laptop while at
Florida. The story is becoming more strange. An unnamed source recently
revealed that Newton talked to potential recruiters while still in JUCO and
the topic of money came up. Pay for play, is something that shouldn’t happen
in college sports, especially the high-profile football.
Kenny Rogers, a former Mississippi State wide receiver and recruiter for the
school now alleges that Cecil Newton, Cam’s father informed recruiters that
where his son played would depend on the pay-for-play plan. He told Rogers
it would take about $100,000 to $180,000 for Newton to join the Bulldogs.
After he chose Auburn, Newton informed other recruiters that the Tigers
offered was just too much to turn down, alleges the source.
It’s pure speculation right now. The NCAA has done some investigating and
found nothing wrong. Auburn doesn’t seem to mind the allegations. They’re
ranked number two in the country and Newton is the leading Heisman
candidate. It would be another black eye to the NCAA and football if the
allegations turn out to be true. Recruiters have always walked a fine line
when it comes to star player, there’s a few gray areas but monetary gifts
are forbidden. Newton has a shot at the national championship. Let’s hope
Auburn will have to give back the BCS National Championship and Newton
doesn’t have to return the Heisman.
