Bud Selig commissioned a study to figure out how to improve
Major League Baseball. One thing the group of individuals is exploring would
be floating divisions. It would mean that they would break up the divisions
to play teams with similar payrolls, or geographies.
This isn't going to happen. Many baseball fans in Baltimore, Toronto and
Tampa Bay want to see this happen because it means a chance at the Wild Card
for their club. It's a pipe dream because so many teams don't want to play
either the Red Sox or Yankees 19 times a season. It's odd when Selig's
stated that Major League Baseball's as competitive as ever. Pittsburgh
Pirates fans would beg to differ.
MLB is fine, as long as the Red Sox and Yankees continue their dominance.
Yea, that's extremely biases, but the television ratings support that
theory. The Tampa Rays are a fun team to watch and a lot of the western
teams are good and entertaining. The but in all this is that they usually
don't sell out games unless the Yankees or Red Sox are in town. Arguments
made that want to see one of the teams move to the National League, it would
make for an interesting World Series. That's not going to happen, there's
too much history in the American League for both teams to just switch.
Major League Baseball isn't broke, so don't fix it. The
Minnesota Twins, a team targeted for contraction a few years ago, will
continue to play well and just signed their franchise player, Joe Mauer to a
long term deal. The Rays have drafted wisely the past few years and it's
paying off now. We'll see what David Price can do with another full year in
the majors. Other owners complain about the spending the Yankees do, but the
other owner's are getting luxury tax from the Yankees to finance their team.
Many of the smaller market teams pay out under what they get in luxury tax.
It's an argument that can be made for the Yankees, spend to get better
talent to compete on the field.
There's ways of having a small payroll to stay competitive. Billy Beane
figured it out with Moneyball and valuing on base percentage plus slugging.
His Athletics teams were competitive for a few years. Even with a small
window to compete, it excites team's fanbases.
It all comes down to the Red Sox and Yankees. Both teams sell out their
opponents stadiums whenever they're in town and spend more money on top
talent. If a team is able to spend more, why not do it? It's important for
the Red Sox and Yankees succeed. It's good for the ratings, and if you
complain over exposure of Red Sox/Yankees, don't watch.
