Road to Brazil 2014 Starts August 10:

The U.S. Men's National Team starts tuning up for the 2014
World Cup in Brazil on July 10. They played a friendly against Brazil at the
New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey. It's a way to thank fans for their
support during this year's World Cup. The U.S. team squandered a chance to
make it to the final four at this year's tournament. They had a relatively
easy draw, with games against Ghana and Uruguay. They were tripped by the
Ghanaians in the round of 16 after winning their group.
The biggest problem for the team going forward is age. Captain Carlos
Bocanegra, Steve Cherundolo will be 35 in 2014. It's a concern for the back
line for the team. Only Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley will be entering
their physical peak. The team will spend the next two years finding a
balance between the established veterans that can play in Brazil. Tim Howard
will most likely be in net. Landon Donovan will play up front. The dilemma
facing the team will be to put a complete tournament together at the World
Cup. They have to learn to be the favorites. They can't play the underdog
card anymore.
They have to learn to take it to lesser teams. The Brazilians didn't bring
their full strength and the Americans will be without some of their top
players that are getting ready for the European season. The other concern is
the long term viability of head coach Bob Bradley. His contract is expiring.
His name is also linked to the Aston Villa opening. Coaching a Premier
League team would be a great boon for the U.S. coach. The national team
would suffer if Bradley leaves it. Continuity with the coaching staff is a
huge part of long term success. Bradley did a great job of managing during
this year's World Cup. He should get another opportunity to coach the men's
national team on the greatest stage.
Soccer is strong in America. The MLS is getting some quality players in
Thierry Henry, Freddie Ljungberg and Rafael Marquez. The U.S. national team
must start rebuilding. It begins tonight. The fans will continue to support
the national team. There will be tournaments, evaluations and some of the
older guys will be replaced. It will be interesting to see which players
showcase their talents. The MLS will continue to be an important
developmental experience for young players. They need to play overseas in
order to prepare for the top competition in the World Cup.
