Bradford Signs Record Rookie Contract:

Training camps have mostly begun. This means the usual
amount of first round picks waiting to sign their first rookie contract.
Most of the first rounder's have signed in the last few days. The large
contracts also were announced late Saturday night. Number one overall pick
Sam Bradford signed a deal for six years that could net him $86 million
dollars over the length of the contract. It sets up for a six year deal with
$78 million. The final number comes with performance clauses in the
contract. The guaranteed money is $50 million dollars. Number five overall
pick Eric Berry signed with the Kansas City Chiefs for six years at $60
million with $34 million in guaranteed money. The contract makes Berry the
highest paid safety in the National Football League. He doesn't have a
career tackle or interception, yet he's the highest paid at his position. Ed
Reed must be thrilled
There are more failure stories than success stories. JaMarcus Russell,
Charlie Rogers, Courtney Brown and Joey Harrington were all top 10 picks
that didn't work out. Most teams still do enough scouting and personality
testing as to avoid draft busts, but it's inevitable, especially if your
team drafts high each year. Top picks that don't work out often set teams
back at least three to four years, ask Detroit Lions fans. The San Diego
Chargers took another change after Ryan Leaf showed how much importance
teams had to place on maturity and intellectual capacity to play in the
league.
Bradford's contract is also the highest ever for guaranteed money. The guys
that get drafted in the top 10 had stellar collegiate careers. The contracts
given out are ludicrous. The players haven't taken an snap in a NFL game and
yet they're the some of the highest paid players in the league. Bradford and
Berry have great track records. They're both stand up guys that will have
quality NFL careers. The NFL is a different kind of league. One that doesn't
cater to the top players, the contracts don't have guaranteed money. The
average playing career is about 3-5 years for players. It's a small window
to make a lot of money. These types of contracts show why the veteran
players want some sort of rookie wage scale. It works in the NBA, why not in
the NFL? The next collective bargaining agreement should include some sort
of wage scale. It would allow for the owners to give more money to the
veteran players. It would also lessen the financial burden on teams that
often draft in the top 10 each season.
Rookies drafted in the top 10 get too large contracts with way to much
guaranteed money. Every NFL player wants that guaranteed money because the
rest of the contract could be compromised by injuries and under performance.
Berry, Bradford and the other top picks have less incentive to perform well.
It must be pride and desire that drives these players, not the money.
Russell proved that players could get caught up in the desire to under
achieve and take the money. Russell won't ever get a quality chance to start
in the NFL, but he'll have a career as a back up. Teams do a much better job
of scouting and finding the right players to fit their system. The rookies
should be paid according to what they could do, not what they did do in
college.
