Berkman To Yankees, Other Trades Made At Deadline:

The Major League Baseball trade deadline has come and gone. Players moved, teams in the pennant race added important players, while some teams dumped salary for players of the future. If your a Houston Astros fan, you said goodbye to two of the franchises' best players in Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman. The Chicago Cubs traded Ted Lily and Ryan Theriot to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Texas Rangers added infielders Jorge Cantu and Cristian Guzman, along with Cliff Lee in the starting rotation.

The New York Yankees added Berkman, along with outfielder Austin Kearns and relief pitcher Kerry Wood. They added these players while only losing two prospects, none of them a top-tiered prospect. It could change, but for now, Kearns will provide a strong right-handed bat off the bench. Berkman will provide flexibility at the designated hitter. Manager Joe Girardi can now put out an even more imposing lineup. Kearns will most likely play against left-handed hitters, taking at-bats away from lefty Curtis Granderson. The Yankees still don't think Granderson can hit lefties and Kearns is a better hitter than Marcus Thames. Wood means they have another piece to that important bridge to Mariano Rivera.

The additions the Texas Rangers made were meant to distance themselves from the rest of the AL West. They did more than that, they essentially wrapped up the division crown by August 1.The St. Louis Cardinals added Jake Westbrook. It's a great pick up for them. Usually, second tiered AL starters find great success in the NL. The Padres added Ryan Ludwick and Miguel Tejada. Teams like the San Francisco Giants couldn't add the bat they were looking for. The trade deadline came and went. Like always, pennant chasing teams added quality players, while other franchises traded away the veterans for a brighter future.
