BCS Picture Getting Clearer After More Upsets

The last few weeks, the last few top undefeated teams in college football have lost. It started with Alabama and Ohio State losing to conference teams. The Oregon Ducks broke the streak of number one ranked teams losing when ESPN College Game day visits the game sight. They dominated the host Southern Cal Trojans, 53-32 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. LaMichael James ran for 239 yards and three touchdowns.

The other undefeated teams weren’t so lucky this past Saturday. Michigan State and Missouri suffered their first defeat of the season. Iowa dominated the Spartans in Iowa City, IA, 37-6. Hawkeyes quarterback Ricky Stanzi threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns. They also scored two touchdowns on interception returns. Nebraska running back Roy Helu Jr. rushed for a new Nebraska single-game rushing record with 307 yards on the day. The Cornhuskers won 31-17. It puts them in a tie for first place with Missouri in the Big 12 East.

The Spartans loss means it’s going to be a scramble to get to the Rose Bowl at the end of the season. Ohio State and Michigan State don’t play each other this season, which means it’s going to be a division record that determines which school goes to Pasadena for the game. The weekend did a solid job of watering down the teams with a chance to win the BCS National Championship. Auburn was one of the top teams that didn’t lose on Saturday. Cam Newton’s performance against Ole Miss pretty much sealed his trip to New York for the Heisman Presentation. James is the only other major threat to Newton’s Heisman Trophy.

The Boise State Broncos might get a chance at the title if teams continue to lose. If Oregon and Auburn finish the season undefeated, they’ll meet in the BCS National Championship game. Auburn has a tougher path because they’ll play in the SEC Championship Game. Anything can happen in big time games like that even if the other team isn’t as talented as Auburn. Boise State deserves a shot at the championship, but it’s not going to happen with BCS schools remaining undefeated during the regular season. It’s going to be another argument for a playoff system in college football. The argument falls on deaf ears because of the money generated by the BCS and other bowl games. It’s something that need to be revisited, pushed by the networks during the contract talks.
