Bay Area Showdown

There will be a rare northern California showdown on
Sunday. The Oakland Raiders will travel across the bay to take on the San
Francisco 49ers in a 4 p.m. est. start. The bay hasn’t seen a winning season
in eight seasons. It looks like the trend will continue this season. The
49ers are winless and the Raiders are sill mired in futility. San Francisco
hasn’t gone this winless to start a season since 1979, when they started the
season 0-7. Jason Campbell will get the start for the Raiders.
It’s been an up and down year for the team. They finished last season 8-8
and were picked by many to win a weak NFC West. They’ve been blown out in
two games and lost two close games. Last week, they turned the ball over
five times in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Mike Singletary
confronted starting quarterback Alex Smith during the game last week after
Smith fumbled in the game. Smith rebounded well, but the effort fell short
of a victory.
The Raiders are 2-3 on the season. Bruce Gradkowski replaced Campbell in a
game against the St. Louis Rams earlier this season. He led the Raiders to a
win in that game. Campbell was brought in to be the starter this year, but
Gradkowski has the arm that’s tailored to the Raiders vertical passing game.
Darren McFadden, when healthy, is having a solid year averaging 98 yards per
game. Michael Bush does a good job when McFadden’s out of the lineup.
The 49ers need a win for confidence. Singletary was expected to lead the
team to the playoffs. He’s the most likely to get fired if the 49ers don’t
have a great showing in the second half of the season. The Raiders are
showing growth as a team. They’re making great strides, but will fall short
on the road. San Francisco will get their first win through a solid defense
with Smith throwing a couple of TDs.
