Argument For College Football Continues to Grow

A Saturday in November means more upsets and the national
championship picture becomes even clearer. LSU ended Alabama’s national
championship hopes with a 24-21 win in Baton Rouge. There’s a slim chance
that Alabama could make the national championship game, but it’s unlikely.
They would have to run the table and win the SEC Championship game at the
Superdome.
Joe Paterno did something we’ll never see again, he won his 400th game. His
Penn State team defeated Northwestern, 35-21. They came back down from a 21
point deficit to down Northwestern. He’s the first Division I coach to
achieve the milestone. Eddie Robinson had 407 wins with Grambling State and
John Gagliardi, at D-III St.John’s Minn., has 476 wins entering this
weekend’s contest. The Nittany Lions take on Ohio State next weekend.
TCU dominated the marquee match up of the day. They earned their first win
at Utah convincingly, by a score of 47-7. Andy Dalton threw for 355 yards
and three touchdowns for the Horned Frogs. TCU’s bolstered their case for a
BCS Bowl berth. Its stifling defense only allowed 199 yards of total
offense. The Horned Frogs are now 10-0 and have a strong case for a berth in
the BCS Championship game. TCU closes out their schedule with games against
San Diego State and New Mexico. They should win out and present a huge
problem for the BCS computers.
TCU and Boise State both deserve a shot at the BCS National Championship.
The problem is that both teams will not be afforded the opportunity. If two
automatic bid schools go undefeated during the regular season, those two
teams will make the BCS National Championship game in Glendale, AZ. There
are two current undefeated schools in Auburn and Oregon that will make the
game because they receive automatic bids. The computer madness and so many
deserving teams showcases how much there needs to be a playoff system in
college football. The television networks have to push for it, which means
more money for the schools. That’s the only thing school’s listen too,
because the BCS games pay out so much to each team.
